“Fat”

26 Apr

In today’s society everything has to “perfect”. So it didn’t surprise me when we read the article “Bodies Out of Bounds: Fatness and Transgression Editor’s Introduction” by Jana Evans Braziel and Kathleen LeBesco. People today can be some mean and cruel when talking about the way someone looks, especially when that person is “fat”. In our society “fat” is not actually fat. I find it kind of sad that our youth is going around thinking that a woman’s size 6 or 8 or even 10 is considered fat! Those sizes are normal not fat or even large. Everyone today is trying to go for the stick thin model look and it is not just women it is also men.

As our society continues to heighten the awareness of weight it starts to have a negative reaction. And now that people are hyper aware of weight, they feel that it is ok to tell people that they need to lose weight for their health when they are maybe 5 pounds heavier than they were a month ago. Not everybody type is the same and not everyone can eat the same amount without gaining weight.  I feel that today’s society needs to stop putting pressure on the way people look and investigate deeper and make sure that, that person is truly healthy. Just because someone looks skinny and healthy doesn’t mean that they are and someone who may seem over weight and unhealthy doesn’t mean that, that’s what they are.

I feel that society as a whole needs to take the magnifier off of weight and take a look at things that aren’t superficial.

So, part of me really agrees with this entire statement. I mean there is so much more to one’s health than what you physically see. i mean what about a person’s daily diet, exercise, metabolism, etc. All of these things play into the way our body appears. Also, i number is not good to focus on because we are built differently. Some of us are built more broad, have more muscle, are taller, etc. All of these things play a huge roe in that final number. However, another part of me disagrees with this claim. That is because i do not see what business iy is of society and outside people. I think that by saying that we still allow society standards to creep in and maintain control.
